National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has cautioned against framing discussions about presidential term limits around President John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, while President Mahama is being applauded by some Ghanaians and party supporters for his performance, the implications of altering the term limits must be considered.

Speaking in a video sighted by GhanaWeb on September 6, 2026, he questioned what would happen if President Mahama were allowed to contest and subsequently lost the election to another candidate.

“If Mahama contests and he doesn’t win, what happens? If another person wins, what happens? Even Nana Addo can contest. Anyone can contest,” he said.

Asiedu Nketiah argued that "Ghana should not make or amend its laws specifically for President Mahama".

Why Asiedu Nketiah never loses elections he contests

Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution currently provides that a person shall not be elected to hold the office of President of Ghana for more than two terms.

President Mahama has himself maintained that he intends to respect the constitutional term limit, saying Ghanaians gave him a mandate for one additional term.
