When the perennial Volta Lake flooding intensified starts killing thousands of ppl in VR with more ppl in galamsey regions also dying from their actions, opinion leaders like Tsatsu Tsikata & Togbe will advise President Mahama to declare a State of Emergency. For now bcoz of politics they care less.

Factually true. Even when we've to stop the cutting down of logs & ban export of timber in 70s & 80s we couldn't. Now it's Galamsey and both NPP & NDC cannot declare State of Emergency to stop it. Our leaders have failed us

I do agree that there is too much focus on theory in Ghana. We need more emphasis on practicality and on a ‘can do’ approach.

Well said Prof. When it comes to the environment, we appear to have a very backward mindset in Ghana.
I could not believe that GoldBod were actually trying to appropriate Parks and Gardens land in Cantonments to build a headquarters. Unbelievable Madness. These are my observations on this.
In the UK for example, almost every single local area, throughout the country, has a park or dedicated and protected Green space for the benefit of residents. Some localities have multiple green spaces.
These protected spaces were very jealously guarded by generations gone, for generations unborn. Each new generation has picked up the batton firmly from the last, and seamlessly maintained the standards they themselves found. Nobody would ever dare to interfere with or encroach upon these dedicated green spaces. Enhancements Yes, but depletions No.
Nobody EVER, EVER says I want to appropriate a part of Hyde Park, Regent’s Park or whatever park, to put up a concrete structure - NEVER. The same NEVER, I can safely say, applies in New York’s Central Park, and in countless similar green spaces in progressive countries all over the globe.
We need to change our environmentally illiterate minds, get up to speed and follow international best practices regarding green spaces. We must urgently adopt the highest environmental protection standards for the sake of our nation’s health and mental wellbeing.
I am so very glad to read that GoldBod has woken up to sanity and dropped its proposal. Thank goodness. We need a new and dynamic Ministry of Parks and Gardens (and Beaches) to rekindle the original vision when The Department of Parks and Gardens was originally established, and we need to raise environmental awareness and protection standards for the country. Wake up Ghanaians !!!!

We can't blame the colonial heritage alone because newer places we see are unplanned and looks more horrible than older places in Accra. It shows the mentally of Ghanaians.

He is telling the truth. Unfortunately, no one is listening. All the past presidents and current one knew and knows about it respectively. However, because of greed, selfishness and incompetence, the problem persists. Condoning and conniving with these incompetent politicians are our traditional rulers who are custodians of the lands and look the other way while their lands are destroyed. If you want to know practical examples, look at Konongo-Odu.asi municipality and the Birim river.
