Ghana’s women’s national football team, the Black Queens, boasts a growing pool of talented players making their mark at clubs across the world.

From Europe and North America to Africa, several Ghanaian stars have gained valuable experience in competitive leagues, strengthening the team ahead of major international assignments.

While FIFA and CAF do not publish an official ranking of Ghana’s top individual female footballers, GhanaWeb has ranked five standout players based on their club experience, international performances, individual honours, leadership and influence on the Black Queens.

Here are the five players currently leading the charge.

Evelyn Badu

Evelyn Badu tops the list following a career that has combined continental success, individual honours and experience across multiple leagues.

The forward rose to prominence with Hasaacas Ladies and became one of the stars of the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League in 2021.

Badu finished that tournament as the top scorer after netting five goals and was named the competition’s Player of the Tournament.

Her performances also earned her the CAF Women’s Interclub Player of the Year and CAF Young Player of the Year awards in 2022.

The 23-year-old subsequently gained experience in Norway with Avaldsnes IL and in France with FC Fleury 91 before moving to Canada to join Montréal Roses FC in the Northern Super League.

Badu’s ability to create chances, carry the ball, score and operate in different attacking positions makes her one of the Black Queens’ most important players.

Her technical quality and experience on the continental stage give her the edge at the top of this ranking.

Portia Boakye

Portia Boakye’s longevity, leadership and international experience make her one of the most influential members of the Black Queens.

The defender has enjoyed an extensive career both in Ghana and abroad, including spells with Swedish clubs Djurgården and Östersunds DFF before joining African powerhouse TP Mazembe.

Boakye is also the captain of the Black Queens, a role that reflects her importance within the squad.

Unlike the other players on this list, her greatest contribution is not necessarily measured by goals. Her defensive organisation, positional awareness, composure and leadership have made her an important figure at the back.

Her wealth of international experience also provides valuable guidance to younger members of the national team.

Boakye was among the experienced players highlighted by CAF ahead of Ghana’s participation at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Grace Asantewaa

Grace Asantewaa has established herself as one of Ghana’s most accomplished midfielders, with experience across several major football markets.

Her career has included spells in Spain with EDF Logroño and Real Betis, as well as a significant stint with FC Juárez in Mexico before her move to Mexican giants Tigres UANL Femenil.

Asantewaa’s strength, tactical intelligence and ability to operate under pressure make her a key component of the Black Queens midfield.

She is capable of contributing both defensively and offensively while helping Ghana maintain possession and control the tempo of games.

Her experience in Spain, the United States and Mexico has also exposed her to different tactical systems, making her one of the more versatile players in the national team.

CAF has identified Asantewaa among the experienced players expected to play an important role for Ghana at the 2026 WAFCON.

Jennifer Cudjoe

Jennifer Cudjoe is another experienced member of Ghana’s current generation and has spent a significant portion of her career playing in the United States.

The midfielder has featured for clubs including Gotham FC, formerly known as Sky Blue FC, and DC Power FC, while also gaining European experience with FC Nordsjælland.

Cudjoe is recognised for her ability to recover possession, provide defensive cover and transition the ball from defence into attack.

She currently serves as deputy captain of the Black Queens, placing her among the team’s key leaders.

Although her senior professional goalscoring numbers are not as prominent as some of the other players on this list, Cudjoe’s importance lies largely in her work rate, ball-winning ability, composure and tactical discipline.

Her experience in the American professional game has also made her an important asset for Ghana against physically demanding opponents.

Doris Boaduwaa

Doris Boaduwaa completes the top five and represents one of Ghana’s most exciting attacking talents.

The forward emerged through Hasaacas Ladies before making the move to Europe, where she featured for Serbian side ŽFK Spartak Subotica.

Boaduwaa announced herself on the European stage by scoring three goals during the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying campaign with Spartak.

She later moved to Israel to join Hapoel Jerusalem, continuing her development as a clinical attacking player.

Her pace, movement, physical positioning and finishing ability make her one of the Black Queens’ most dangerous attacking options.

Boaduwaa has also become an increasingly important player for Ghana at international level, particularly with the team looking to strengthen its attacking options.

A strong core for the Black Queens

The five players offer different qualities to the Black Queens.

Badu provides creativity, goals and attacking versatility; Boaduwaa offers pace and a direct goal threat; Asantewaa brings strength and tactical intelligence to midfield; Cudjoe provides ball recovery and experience; while Boakye offers leadership and defensive stability.
