A Nigerian court has heard that the driver of the vehicle carrying Anthony Joshua was attempting to overtake a truck when he lost control of the car, resulting in a crash that killed two members of the boxer’s team in December 2025.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, is facing charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid national driver’s licence. He has pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

According to evidence presented in court, Kayode was driving a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and members of his team when the incident occurred in December last year.

The group was travelling to Ogun State, near Lagos, to visit Joshua’s father.

The passengers were reportedly asleep when Kayode attempted to pass a moving truck before the Lexus veered out of control and struck a lorry that was parked on the roadside.

The collision claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami. Joshua, who was travelling as a passenger, survived the accident.

Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division told the court that police found debris from the crash and soybeans scattered across the road after arriving at the scene. The damaged vehicles had already been removed.

He added that items recovered from the Lexus included a logbook, painkillers and an energy drink, all found close to the driver’s side.

The court also heard that police have not yet obtained a statement from Joshua.

Kayode’s lawyer raised the issue during cross-examination, with the officer saying efforts were still being made.

The case has been adjourned until September 10, 2026.
