The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced plans to expand the Port of Takoradi into a major multi-purpose marine industrial complex under the proposed Sekondi-Takoradi (SEKTAK) Project.

According to the Minister, the project is expected to transform Takoradi into an integrated marine, industrial and logistics hub.

He said the vision goes beyond the traditional functions of a seaport and will include facilities to support shipping, offshore activities, business and trade.

The Minister made the remarks in a Facebook post by the Transport Ministry sighted by GhanaWeb Business on Friday, September 4, 2026, following a stakeholder consultative meeting on the SEKTAK Project.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders to discuss the project and its potential impact on the Sekondi-Takoradi area.

He said the project would provide complementary infrastructure to improve connectivity and support the growth of Takoradi as a port city.

“The vision for Takoradi Port goes beyond conventional port operations,” he said.

The project proponents are proposing the development of about 1,000 hectares of new land through reclamation from the sea. The reclaimed land will be used to establish the proposed Multi-Purpose Marine Industrial Complex.

Nikpe said the new complex would complement the existing Takoradi Port rather than compete with or replace it.

“The SEKTAK Project is intended to complement, rather than compete with or replace, the existing Takoradi Port,” he said.

He also sought to allay concerns about the possible impact of the project on communities and landowners. According to him, the project will not require the acquisition of farmlands or the displacement of existing settlements.

The Minister said the stakeholder consultation was important to ensure that the views and concerns of relevant groups were considered as the project progresses.

He said the proposed development could strengthen Takoradi’s position as a centre for marine services, logistics, offshore operations and industrial activity.

Nikpe said the broader objective was to create the infrastructure needed to support shipping and trade while contributing to the economic development of Takoradi and the wider Western Region.

The SEKTAK Project, he said, is therefore being positioned as a long-term investment in Ghana’s maritime and industrial economy.
