The National Public Relations Officer of the Commercial National Motor Riders Union (CNMRU), Setsoafia Quarshie Pascal, has disclosed that the government is establishing an electric motorcycle assembly plant in Ghana to support the local production of electric motorcycles.

Speaking at a press meeting on Friday, September 4, 2026, he said the initiative would create new opportunities for commercial motorcycle riders while promoting modern and environmentally friendly practices in the sector.

He said the initiative, introduced through the intervention of President John Dramani Mahama, would allow commercial motor riders to access locally assembled electric motorcycles under a Work and Pay arrangement.

Setsoafia Quarshie Pascal said the move demonstrated that the government was looking beyond the legalisation of commercial motorcycle operations and was also focused on transforming the sector.

“The initiative is expected to provide opportunities for commercial motor riders to adopt modern and environmentally friendly motorcycles under the Work and Pay arrangement. This is another indication that the government is looking beyond simply legalising the sector and is also seeking to modernise it and improve the economic condition of riders,” he said.

He further said the initiative would help improve the operations of commercial motorcycle riders while creating opportunities for them to transition to cleaner forms of transportation.

The CNMRU Public Relations Officer also rejected claims that the government had abandoned commercial motor riders, stressing that the union had been actively engaging the government and relevant institutions on issues affecting its members.

“We are a union engaging government. We want to make this clear that CNMRU is a union engaging government,” he said.

He said the union, led by its national, regional and zonal executives, represents thousands of commercial motor riders across the country and remains committed to engaging the government on policies affecting the sector.

Setsoafia Quarshie Pascal also explained that the union’s support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 election campaign was based on its commitment to addressing the legal and regulatory challenges confronting commercial motorcycle riders.

He said the union supported President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC because of their promise to work towards the legalisation and regulation of commercial motorcycle operations.

“We did not support the NDC mainly for political convenience. We supported a commitment, and today we are witnessing the government fulfilling that commitment,” he said.

He added that the union was pleased with the progress being made towards the legalisation and regulation of commercial motorcycle operations and would continue to engage the government and relevant institutions on the process.

The union believes the planned electric motorcycle assembly plant, together with the proposed regulation of the sector, could help modernise commercial motorcycle operations and improve the livelihoods of riders across the country.
