Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has described the GH¢1 million given to Ghana Premier League clubs by the government and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as “good progress,” but insists more investment is needed to strengthen the domestic league.

According to him, the money may not last long for clubs that properly cater for their players, coaches and management.

“GH¢1 million for a well-managed club, a club that is really taking care of its players, management and coaching staff, it couldn’t even go beyond two months. That’s the truth, “he stated.

Agbana said Ghana must make the Premier League more competitive and attract more investors into the game.

He also called for reforms to the academy system, arguing that academies should have senior teams competing in Ghana’s domestic leagues.

“If you have an academy in this country, you should be made to be part of the league,” he added.

He said this would give young players the opportunity to gain experience in Ghana before moving to the international stage.

“Everybody is interested in just running the academies, getting the young boys and then exporting them out. What is happening to our talents here? What is happening to our own domestic league? “he questioned.
