Corporal Punishments do not solve the ills that students do in schools. Their bad and evil activities get suppressed but they become violent as the students grow up. It could not stop mine until I was Counselled to and prayed for to distinguish between between what is good and bad, and not to do what is wrong. That has helped me a lot in life because Corporal Punishments would have made me rebellious and violent as I grew up.

The issue of corporal punishment is a thorny. It can be useful if done correctly and with the right perspective. But some teachers clearly misuse and abuse it. They simply inflict pain and terror; not corrective measure. In the past, much have been left to the individual teacher's discretion - no orientation, guidelines and monitoring in the use of corporal punishment and that has been the problem.

Our children are beating thier teachers for not allowing them to teach during exams. As if that was not enough they are now resorting to arson. What is happening to our children?? Some of the reasons can be traced to two policies that came into effect when NAPO was education minister. First NAPO took the absolute power to discipline out of headmaster's hands and made them share it with the district educational authorities. So when it came to dismissing students for serious offences the headmaster had to take such a decision together with the district educational authorities. I don't know whether this is still happening. Secondly was the abolition of the parent teachers associations and converting them into parents associations with the headmaster as an ex officio member. Headmasters became timorous souls at meetings because they were suspicious of certain parents reporting them to the authorities for discussing problems of the free SHS and other issues in their schools. They could site examples of colleagues being sanctioned and being transferred. Some of these Headmasters still harbour such timidity. I hear the PTA has been brought back by the current government but I don't know whether the power to dismiss has been restored to school authorities. Indiscipline in our schools is getting out of hand by the day. What should we do when some parents now gift cars to their children as graduation presents for completing basic schools. Will such students respect their teachers who may never own cars in their lives? I could go on and on but this is my two pence take on this matter.

There was much Discipline at the School., The School had the largest School farm and Poultry farm in the country. Yes, it was a School for the Rich. What happened? Things started deteriorate after the AFRC Coup. It was around that time that Mount Sinai Secondary School had been formed. Okuapemman is a very old school and Students'nonsense should not be tolerated.

At that time the academic and Sports performance of Mount Zion was not commendable at all as compared to Okuapemman. If the students there have to pay for Boarding and Lodging, then many will never attend any High Schools. Some of them will have to ride the Bicycle for twenty miles daily or longer to be able to go to school. Their towns are far from Schools and are have no motorable roads. People do distances by foot or Bicycle. It is a luxury to own a Motorcycle.
Birding and Lodging are desperately needed at some places. I lived 8 Tamale and know what I am talking about. Yes, and I know all the the way to Bawku Wa and Yendi. Communities should be encouraged to pay taxes and in kind to support the feeding of their students. If there should be Free Education, it should be for all Ghanaian students.

I acknowledge your mention of issues for some areas of the country but we cannot carry on as normal. That would even create more problems far worse than we have today.
At least, we should have school paying for some areas and means tested for those who may struggle to pay so everyone learn to value the essence of education and its cost.
You know what happens in the West, these free things are run alongside free abortions. Some people just cannot plan their lives. They live by chance.
The article is about a school in the Eastern Region where access and wealth are relatively good but we still have these happenings, probably spread from the north if you wish to see it that way.
For many years, education to SHS level in the north was free but how many of them ever took advantage of it.
May be, in the north, students can return home on Friday and back on Sunday evening. Parents need to contribute something other than just eggs and sperm.
We need a working localised solution to this problems before it gets out of hand.
This wholesale free SHS, heavily subsidised by donor funds is not sustainable and already creating future generations with poor education and mindset.
