This is the way to go. We can use such an integrated waste system to create more jobs and wealth in the country. These are my few suggestions.
1. Every community or Assembly should have a waste transfer station Managed by the assembly in partnership with recycling companies, particularly Jaspong group.
2. Have a partnership with Kantanka automobile to build proper tricycles with well covered containers to carry waste safely. The government then goes into a high purchase agreement and buy these tricycles at discount prices for the youth who are interested to use it for waste delivery.
3. Every waste tricycle should be registered with a particular assembly to carry waste from a district or assembly to the Assemblies transfer centre which is situated within the assembly. Segregated waste gets a discount, to encourage waste segregation.
4. Fintechs can even create a waste delivery app for effective and easy waste collection from homes by these tricycles. With this, you can order for waste collection from the comfort of your home.
5. Assemblies should go into partnership with recycling companies to build more recycling plants to process the waste sent to these transfer centres, to generate revenue and employment. The assemblies share from these recycling investment can help in investing in other waste management ventures, like investing in the production of bins, refuse bags etc etc.
With this integrated approach, we will not only solve waste problems in the country, but also we will generate wealth and create jobs.

I suggest that the new Minister understudy the Norwegian waste management system for implementation or pilot testing in Ghana. Each Assembly, Municipality should have its own waste management recycling value chain and have a waste management company (private-public ownership) (40 percent or more ownership by the Assembly, Municipality), all the systems should be put in place for waste sorting, collection and recycling. Then as a Minister for local government please see to it that the decentralization is properly implemented and overseen by the Ministry. Roads in the local communities and residences are very bad. The government should make allocation for building these roads, building sanitation systems among others to make living in these places meaningful. A case in point is the Ablekuma abase road. A simple 2km road for the past 15-20 years have never been constructed. The people living in such places feel 'isolated' from the big men politicians. Several communities in Accra (and Kumasi and the regional capitals) still live in the 'stone-age'-no good road, no water, no gutter, no waste collection system, no market place etc. I call this the 'red-earth' syndrome which is a common feature of several communities in Accra. As a new Minister, a 'Bawku boy' I believe you understand these concerns. The 'red-earth' syndrome can be seen all over the Northern region too. We challenge you as the new Minister to make a difference! To take it up as your task with the President to make this 'red-earth' syndrome associated with almost all communities in the country a thing of the past. If the government can direct resources into improving the physical spaces and living places (I mean the roads, the parks, the playing fields for kids, the gutters,the bus stops/trotro/taxi stops and lorry parks, waste collection systems etc) that enhance the living conditions of the citizens, this government would be one of the best that the citizens would love to keep for a long time. Norwegian communities and living spaces can provide some insights for the government and the new Minister to learn from. The change can be done through the assembles, the municipalities, the metropolitan assemblies; they need to be resourced to make these changes in the communities. These assemblies, and municipalities need very strong oversight(supervision, accountability, contracting, auditing, punishment for corruption, monitoring & control, etc) from the central ministry to effect these changes! The Ablekuma Abase is just one example, places in Madina, Kwashiema, Santa Maria, Abeka, Osu, Chokor, New Town, Nima, Ashongman, Dansoman, Kasoa, Ashaiman etc are all evidence of the 'red-earth' syndrome. Same situation in all the regions! These situation define the 'underdevelopment' of the country and the President and the government and the New Minister can turn this situation round for the better! So, welcome Mr New Minister!

I wish to congratulate Hon. Mahama Ayariga for his action to tackle this problem of Accra being swallowed by filth. The pungent smell of the rotten garbage in many spots within our national capital must be eradicated and the newly appointed minister needs to be supported by the President and all agencies especially the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the various assemblies in the affected areas. We should not allow the filth to choke the city of Accra our capital. Minister Mahama has proved to many citizens that the President made a very good decision to appoint him to head such an important ministry. Congrats President Mahama. Please get rid of
the bad smell which carry all kinds of deases to citizens of Accra and beyond.
