Somewhere along the line, the Military were dispatched to help me situation but after some time, they became equally corrupt. It is unfortunate that Efo Julor John Rawlings who claimed to be against corruption in Ghana with Boakye Djan became even more dangerously dangerous in corruption. Rawlings left the Presidency with his family as the richest President and Head of State that ever ruled out beloved Ghana. Corruption has eaten into the very fabrics of our society. That is extremely shameful for us.

I was stopped by them one early morning driving from Aflao to Accra and was asked to produce my driver's licence so I showed them my UK licence and the International Driving License (IDL). Thereupon the policeman asked if the Ghana DVLA had endorsed my license which was a requirement by Ghana laws. Patiently I explained to him that I didn't need any endorsement as the IDL is accepted in participating countries including Ghana. Attempting to explain this meant I was arguing with him whilst there was none. His decision was to take me with the car to the station and prepare me for court. Then his superior officer became involved and reprimanded his man for his actions when he realised my occupation on the UK license. I didn't bulge but was very patient and firm. After about almost 45 minutes of "unlawful detention", i was ler off to continue my journey to Accra. Other check points on the way were very polite and professional. The bad one must be weeded out because that show of power was unnecessary.

The Police Commanders do not even know how many weapons are held at individual police stations in their Regions. Overall, the system lacks accountability and a sense of responsibility. There is a lack of systematic and consistent oversight at police headquarters, which is why we keep hearing the same complaints from the public. Fortunately, we have a Chief Inspector of Police who is at least doing something about it. It is not the police who are corrupt or guilty, but the political institutions. These institutions must, first and foremost, respect the law and take their responsibilities seriously; in other words, corrupt politicians should be sent to prison immediately if found guilty – none of them should be allowed to disappear. Appeals here and there achieve nothing; moreover, they are nothing more than a form of corruption. Pingpong game!
