Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC) prior to the 2024 general elections, has revealed the reasons he resigned from his job as an account officer at the then Internal Revenue Service, now the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), in 2023.

According to him, he was not good at handling money and believes that if he had not taken steps to address the situation at the time, he could have been arrested.

Speaking in an interview on UTV’s Ayekoo with Anim Addo on August 27, 2026, Mornah said that during his time at the Internal Revenue Service, he sometimes used office money to settle the financial difficulties of people he referred to as his “boys.”

“I used to work at the Internal Revenue Service, now the Ghana Revenue Authority, but during those times, I was still doing farming.

“I resigned in 2023 because one of the things I realised was that my pay wasn’t enough for me. I was an accounts officer, and because of that, I didn’t get time to do extra work.

“My boss was called Owusu Ansah, and he was always on me to do the work diligently and correct every mistake of every officer, “he said.

He explained that whenever an audit was due at the end of the month, he would use his salary to replace the money he had taken from the office.

Mornah said it took the intervention of his boss, Owusu Ansah, for him to realise his shortcomings and eventually decide to resign.

“I also noticed that if I hadn’t taken time to change, I would have been arrested because, for me, if you give me money and my boys come around, I might share it with them.

“So, I used to open the office and take money for my boys. One day, my boss, Owusu Ansah, told me, Bernard, I have seen that every month, when it is time for an audit, you go for your salary and replace the money that you have taken from the office. But I know that you have been spending office money and the day that the auditors come around and ask for the money and there is no money there, there would be trouble.’

“Then I noticed that I am not good at handling cash, so I chose not to be a good accountant to handle money, and I left,” he added.
