Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has cautioned the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over the rising unemployment rate in the country.

According to him, the recent World Bank report, which disclosed that Ghana’s unemployment rate stands at 56.4%, is alarming and reflects poorly on governance.

Speaking on The Key Points aired on TV3 on August 29, 2026, Kpebu noted that although democracy is thriving, such issues could derail progress in the near future.

“I always say that this is our democracy. We have a bright future, absolutely. Very bright, because the people are becoming more vigilant. They are watching with keen eyes, trying to understand. And the moment enough people understand, that will be game over for the politicians.

"So the NDC should be careful. Since they won, it’s not as if everything they say, we just sit here and applaud. No, we are critically analyzing. The worrying problem is the unemployment rate. Sometimes it gives me jitters. When too many young people are unemployed, it’s like gunpowder, it can explode at any moment,” he remarked.

The legal practitioner further warned that if the unemployment crisis is not addressed with urgency, Ghana could face youth uprisings similar to those witnessed in Kenya over poor governance.

He urged President John Dramani Mahama to deal with the issue decisively, despite the difficulty of the task.

“Like what happened in Kenya with the Gen Zs, that gives me fear. Earlier this week, the World Bank reported that 56.4% of Ghanaians are living in poverty. When it’s like that, you get scared, because even when you’re in your car in traffic, you’re not safe.

"So JM, I know it’s difficult. I can imagine. But that’s the position, you have to do something. Pull a rabbit out of the hat, wave a magic wand, because honestly, it’s scary,” Kpebu lamented.
