Minister of State in charge of Special Initiatives, Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, says sustained dialogue between government and organised labour helped avert about 90 per cent of planned industrial actions during his tenure as Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment.

According to him, 17 potential strike actions had been reported by various worker groups when he assumed office, creating the risk of disruptions to public services.

Dr Pelpuo said the Labour Ministry adopted a proactive approach by engaging the affected groups, listening to their concerns and working with relevant stakeholders to resolve the issues.

“We had meetings with them, we listened to them, we cooperated, they cooperated. We got to a point where almost 90% of them gave up their strike actions,” he said.

According to a report by adomonline.com on August 28, 2026 , Dr Pelpuo said the government’s strategy was to understand the concerns of workers and negotiate solutions rather than allow disputes to escalate into strikes.

“Almost everywhere, they said they were going on strike,” he said.

He cited the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) as one of the groups whose planned industrial action was addressed through such engagements.

Dr Pelpuo explained that GAUA presented its concerns to the Labour Ministry, after which discussions were held with the workers and the Ministry of Education to find solutions to the issues raised.

He said the outcome demonstrated the importance of continuous engagement between government and organised labour in resolving workplace disputes and maintaining industrial peace.
