A Ghanaian Creative Director and song writer, Panji Anoff, has shared an interesting theory suggesting possible historical links between the Ashanti Kingdom and ancient Egypt.

In a video shared on TikTok and sighted by GhanaWeb on August 15, 2026, Panji explained that certain linguistics in the Akan language and names suggest possible connections between ancient Egyptian royalty the royals from the Ashanti Kingdom.

He indicated that cultural traits and similarities in names and language could point to a much deeper relationship between the two civilisations.

One of the first names to come up in the conversation was Tutankhamun, the famous Egyptian pharaoh whose tomb became one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.

He, however, questioned the popular pronunciation of the name, referring to the Egyptian king as “Tutu” and pointing out that Tutu is also an Akan royal family name.

According to him similarities between certain words from the two civilisations are too striking to dismiss and encouraged further research into the historical relationship between ancient Egypt and West Africa.

He also cited ancient Egypt's most recognisable symbols the ankh, commonly associated with life.

He then compared the ancient Egyptian term for life with an Akan word, as ‘Nkwa’ arguing that the similarity demonstrates that the two languages may have shared an ancient connection.
