An eyewitness has recounted how a shootout between the police and suspected armed robbers unfolded during an attempted robbery at the Labone branch in Accra on August 13, 2026.

Nketiah, a security guard who witnessed the incident, said he and others rushed to the scene after hearing gunshots.

According to him, the police were pursuing a vehicle believed to be carrying the suspected robbers, who allegedly refused to surrender and attempted to flee.

“We were here and heard a gunshot, so we rushed to see what was happening. We saw the police officers shooting at a car but the driver refused to surrender and tried to run away.

“The police kept shooting until they got them. The police made calls and chased them all over the place, and they eventually ran back here. So, with the exchange of gunfire, two people died as the police exchanged gunfire with the armed robbers,” he said.

The Ghana Police Service has announced that its officers foiled an armed robbery attack at Labone in Accra.

In a post shared on social media on Thursday, August 13, 2026, the Police Service said its officers intervened to stop the robbery and shot two of the suspected assailants, while another was arrested.

“The Ghana Police Service today, 13th August 2026, foiled a robbery attempt on the GCB Bank, Labone, Accra. Two suspects have been gunned down and one has been arrested,” the police stated.

The Police Service, however, did not immediately clarify whether the two suspects who were shot had died or sustained serious injuries.

It said further details about the incident would be communicated in due course.

Meanwhile, a video from the scene showed police officers carrying what appeared to be a lifeless body.

Several of the officers at the scene were dressed in plain clothes and were heavily armed as they secured the area following the incident.
