Assembly Member for Ofankor South, Dennis Daniel Kwashi, has recounted the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Ofankor Barrier in Accra.

Speaking to Accra-based TV3 Ghana, and monitored by GhanaWeb, he said he received news of the accident around 5:30 am and rushed to the scene.

According to him, eyewitnesses reported that a tipper truck had collided with a tricycle, after which other vehicles, unaware of the initial crash, bumped into each other, compounding the situation.

"Around 5:30, I had to rush in. When I came, the whole place was very bad. The dead bodies were being taken away. I met one of the eyewitnesses who narrated the story to me. He said there had been an accident caused by a tipper truck hitting a tricycle. The driver did not stop and went away, but the tricycle driver died on the spot," he narrated.

"A police officer later arrived at the scene and began directing traffic. While in the process of directing traffic, another truck driver, unaware of what was happening, stopped when he saw the policeman. Behind him was a passenger car that did not realise the truck had stopped, and hence crashed into the truck.

“...Another car followed and also hit the passenger vehicle. That van had about 15 passengers in it. Then another car with four passengers also crashed into the van, leading to two more deaths," Kwashie added.

The Assembly member noted that this is a recurring problem on the highway.

He urged the Ghana Highway Authority to review the road’s construction and signage, stressing that it is unacceptable for a newly built road to record accidents almost every month.

"This area is known for accidents, especially when vehicles descend the slope at high speed. Almost every month, accidents occur here. Local leaders have suggested that a ramp or some measure to slow down traffic should be introduced to reduce the danger," he said.

Most of those who died were traders from the market, transporting goods such as oranges.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed eleven deaths, while thirteen people have been injured and are receiving care at hospitals.
