Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Asiama has urged commercial banks to develop investment products targeting Ghanaians living abroad as a part of efforts to channel remittances into savings and productive investment.

Speaking to heads of banks at the Bank Square in Accra, Asiama said banks should use digital and mobile platforms to make it easier for the Ghanaian diaspora to save and invest in the country.

The discussions formed part of efforts to support the development of a national remittance strategy aimed at increasing the contribution of remittances to Ghana’s economic development.

Asiama said banks should move beyond facilitating basic money transfers and offer dedicated products that allow diaspora customers to direct remittances towards savings, investments and other productive economic activities.

“Ghana’s banking sector must do more than preserve stability; it must actively translate that stability into opportunities across the economy,” Asiama said.

Ghana’s economy expanded by 6.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, driven mainly by the services and industry sectors, the Governor said.

Headline inflation also eased to 4.6% in July from 5.3% in June, supported by slower food price growth and relative stability in the exchange rate.

The latest inflation reading strengthens the central bank’s progress in bringing price pressures closer to its medium-term target and comes amid continued efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability.

Asiama said the resilience of the economy provided an opportunity for the banking sector to play a greater role in supporting investment and broad-based economic activity.

The Governor’s call comes as Ghana seeks to maximise the economic benefits of remittances from its large diaspora community including by encouraging funds sent home to be used for longer-term financial investments rather than primarily for consumption.

The Bank of Ghana has increasingly emphasised digital financial services and financial inclusion as tools to expand access to banking and investment products.

Asiama said a resilient banking sector should not only safeguard financial stability but also help create opportunities for households and businesses across the economy.
