Senior Presidential Advisor to President John Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has questioned the Ghana Bar Association’s (GBA) decision to publicly raise concerns over the Chief Justice’s directive for selected judges to sit during the legal vacation.

In a post on X on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Mogtari said she found it difficult not to perceive ‘ulterior motives’ in the GBA’s letter addressed to the Chief Justice.

She argued that the GBA’s position appeared to challenge the administrative authority of the Chief Justice.

“It sounds almost like an affront to the administrative authority of the Chief Justice,” she said.

Mogtari noted that it had been customary for vacation judges to sit during the legal vacation to expedite cases and reduce the workload of the courts.

She therefore questioned why the GBA would seek to challenge the Chief Justice’s decision, particularly through a public letter.

“Why would the GBA want to needlessly undermine the work of the Chief Justice and to do so in such a public manner also sounds very disrespectfully disturbing,” she stated.

Her comments come amid an ongoing debate over the decision to have selected judges hear cases during the legal vacation, with the GBA raising concerns about the practice.
