Legendary Portuguese manager José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid for a second stint has rekindled memories of his time working with African players at the club.

The recent signing of Ivorian winger Yan Diomande marks another moment where the coach has turned to African talent to strengthen what he calls “the greatest club in the world.”

In the past, the former Inter Milan boss relied on the services of African players to win laurels in the Spanish league, and he has once again deployed the same strategy.

Michael Essien (Ghana)

One of the most surprising transfer stories was Michael Essien’s move from Chelsea to Real Madrid in 2013.

Shortly after winning the Champions League with Chelsea, Essien, who had fallen out of favor at Stamford Bridge, reunited with Mourinho at Madrid.

During his one-year loan spell, the Ghanaian legend made 35 appearances, scoring two goals and providing one assist for Los Blancos.

Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo)

In January 2011, Real Madrid announced the loan signing of former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City until the end of the 2010/11 season.

The move was prompted by Mourinho’s desire to bolster his attack, with Gonzalo Higuaín sidelined by injury and Karim Benzema struggling for form.

Adebayor’s playing time had diminished under Roberto Mancini at City, and the Togolese striker seized the chance to revive his career.

With an option to buy included in the contract, Adebayor impressed during his short spell, scoring eight goals in 22 appearances and helping Madrid win the Copa del Rey.

Yan Diomande (Ivory Coast)

Real Madrid recently completed the signing of Ivorian winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, securing the highly-rated teenager on a seven-year contract.

The Spanish giants confirmed the agreement on Thursday, August 6, 2026, announcing that Diomande will remain at the club until June 30, 2033.

The 19-year-old arrives after a breakthrough campaign with Leipzig, where he registered 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.

Born in Abidjan, Diomande’s move is understood to have been pushed by Mourinho, who believes his skill set will be crucial to Madrid’s future success.

Reports indicate Real Madrid agreed a deal worth around €125 million, potentially rising to €140 million through add-ons.
