Former Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, has questioned the credibility of his daughter’s 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) result after she obtained Grade 1 in Twi despite, according to him, having little understanding of the language.

His concerns come amid calls by the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) for an independent review of the marking of the 2026 BECE.

GNACOPS has accused the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) of unfairly marking candidates from private schools and is demanding that the Ministry of Education establish an independent review committee to examine the results.

Speaking about his daughter’s performance in a viral video sighted by GhanaWeb on August 11, 2026, he said that his daughter who attended a private school was not proficient in Twi, making her Grade 1 result in the subject difficult for him to understand.

“My daughter and my mother had disagreements because of language barrier, so, I directed that Twi would be the main language at home,” he said.

He explained that despite the arrangement, his daughter still did not understand the language well.

“My daughter was one of the candidates who wrote the 2026 BECE. She doesn't understand Twi. She got 1 in Twi. The question is, how did my daughter get that grade in Twi?” he quizzed.

According to him, his daughter does not even know basic Twi greetings.

“She doesn't know basic greetings in Twi. If you ask her how we Akans greet in the morning, she will say ‘Maaha’ which is means (Good afternoon),” he said.

Boadu-Ayeboafoh said he subsequently visited his daughter’s school to seek clarification on how she could have obtained such a high grade in a subject he believed she had limited knowledge of.

“I even went there to inquire how she got that grade. They were not happy about my interrogation of her results,” he said.

He stated that, based on his understanding of his daughter’s proficiency in Twi, he would not have been surprised if she had obtained a much lower grade.

“Even if she got 7 in Twi, I wouldn't be surprised,” he said.

His comments follow growing concerns over the 2026 BECE results, particularly the performance of candidates from private schools.

The Executive Director of GNACOPS, Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, has said the council has gathered what it describes as “credible evidence” that the grades awarded to some private school candidates do not reflect their academic performance or continuous assessment records.

Gyetuah said more than 14,000 private schools had expressed concerns following a nationwide call for feedback.

He said the council intends to present a petition to the Minister of Education together with affected students and parents.

“We are the people that submitted the continuous assessment, I mean, records to the ministry through Ghana Education Service on these learners and so, when we come out to say that the exams report or results that have been issued by WAEC is not a clear reflection of the academic performance of these learners, we know exactly what we are saying,” he said.

GNACOPS is therefore seeking an independent assessment of the 2026 BECE marking process to determine whether the concerns raised by private schools are justified.
