Political analyst Samuel Boateng has urged President John Dramani Mahama to intensify his cabinet reshuffle by removing underperforming ministers rather than merely reassigning them.

His comments follow a government reshuffle announced in an official statement issued on August 7, 2026, by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.

In accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution, the nominations have been submitted to Parliament through the Speaker for vetting and approval. Under the new nominations, Korle Klottey MP Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings has been nominated to head the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, while Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has been nominated to lead the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Additionally, two serving ministers have been reassigned. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has been appointed Minister for Defence, while Banda MP Ahmed Ibrahim has been moved to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.

Describing the changes as minor, Boateng argued that Ghanaians expect a more comprehensive overhaul of the government.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM with host Kwabena Agyapong, Boateng specifically singled out Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak as officials who should be dismissed rather than reassigned.

“We expect President John Dramani Mahama to make significant changes to his government. Some ministers should be reassigned to positions where they can perform better. Others are politically handicapped and need to be moved. However, there are some who have performed poorly and should be dismissed without any reassignment. There are also those who have made serious mistakes and must be shown the exit.

“Off the top of my head, I believe the Health Minister should be relieved of his position. He has failed and appears overwhelmed by the demands of the office. In my view, he would have performed better as a Deputy Health Minister,” Boateng stated.

When asked by the host whether the Interior Minister should also be removed, Boateng responded in the affirmative, arguing that he, too, had failed to perform effectively in his role.
