A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Legal Team, Enoch Afoakwa, has urged Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, to publicly identify the officials who travelled to Turkey to inspect equipment for a power plant project linked to the $1million bribery scandal.

Afoakwa made the remarks on the August 10, 2026 edition of Joy News’ AM Show while discussing the United States conviction of Asante Kwaku Berko, former Goldman Sachs executive, and one-time Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).

“I believe it is in the interest of the state for the Minister of Communications to come forward and tell the people of this country who travelled to Turkey to inspect the power plant and allegedly received $5,000.

"...Was that taken on behalf of the government, or for their own benefit? Let the record be set straight. We must also know the parliamentarians who benefited from the $46,000, and I believe there may be more,” he added.

In the same interview, Afoakwa also described Berko’s conviction as “a slap in the face of law enforcement in Ghana,” arguing that local agencies such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor, the Economic and Organised Crime Office, and the police have not sufficiently pursued related leads despite the US findings.

He further called on former Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor, to avail himself for investigation, stating that integrity would protect the innocent.

A federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, convicted Berko on August 6, 2026, on charges including conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), violating the FCPA, and money laundering conspiracy.

Prosecutors established that Berko and co-conspirators paid or conspired to pay more than $1 million in bribes to Ghanaian government officials to secure approvals and financing for a power plant project involving Turkish energy company Aksa Enerji during Ghana’s energy crisis in 2014–2015.

Evidence presented at the trial included an all-expenses-paid trip to Turkey in which five Ghanaian officials each received $5,000 while inspecting equipment for the proposed plant.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has stated that it assisted US authorities in the case.
