The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has said strong exports of gold and cocoa helped Ghana record a higher trade surplus during the first half of 2026.

According to him, the strong performance of the two key export commodities contributed significantly to the country's improved trade position, providing further support for the economy.

“Exports of gold and cocoa have performed strongly, helping Ghana record a higher trade surplus during the first half of the year,” Dr Asiama said.

He made the remarks at a stakeholder engagement in Sunyani in the Bono Region on Sunday, August 9, 2026, where he also highlighted the Bank's commitment to maintaining economic stability.

Dr Asiama said the current 14% policy rate provides sufficient room for the central bank to keep inflation under control while creating an environment that supports businesses, investment and economic growth.

He further assured stakeholders that the Bank of Ghana would continue to work towards maintaining an orderly and well-functioning foreign exchange market.

“Our goal is simple: to create an economic environment where businesses can grow with confidence, households can plan for the future, and every Ghanaian can share in the benefits of a stable and growing economy,” he said.

The Governor stressed that creating a stable economic environment remains a key priority of the central bank, noting that businesses must have the confidence to plan, invest and expand.

He, however, cautioned that despite the progress recorded so far, Ghana must remain vigilant, as uncertainties in the global economy could still impact the country.

"The progress we have made is encouraging, but we must not become complacent. The global economy remains uncertain, and events beyond our borders can still affect us," Dr Asiama said.

He added that the Bank of Ghana would continue to take measures aimed at protecting the value of the cedi, keeping inflation low, preserving financial stability and supporting sustainable economic growth.

"That is why the Bank of Ghana will continue to take decisions that protect the value of the cedi, keep inflation low, preserve financial stability and support sustainable economic growth," he noted.
