The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has expressed disappointment over the recent arrests of individuals accused of insulting political leaders and government officials in the country.

According to him, he is personally opposed to the arrest of people for insulting the government or its officials.

Dafeamekpor noted that these arrests are often not sanctioned by the government but are initiated by the Police.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 on August 8, 2026, he argued that although insults are unfortunate, they do not harm the government in any way and, therefore, such arrests should cease.

He further expressed concern that the arrests could ultimately work against the government.

“I am upset by some of these arrests; they go against the government. Sometimes, the government does not even sanction them; it is the Police. As a government, we must pay attention to some of these things because they do not help. These insults do not hurt the government, so we should allow the people to speak,” he said.

He was speaking in relation to the Democracy Under Threat demonstration organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
