Ghana currently has more than five weeks of fuel stocks, easing concerns over possible shortages amid uncertainty in the global oil market, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has disclosed.

Director of Economic Regulation and Planning at the NPA, Abass Tasunti, said the country’s fuel supply remains stable despite fears that Middle East tensions could disrupt international petroleum flows and push up prices.

“In terms of actual stocks, we have a little over five weeks average for both petrol and diesel today,” he told JoyNews on August 6, 2026.

Tasunti explained that the figure does not mean Ghana has only five weeks of fuel left, noting that shipments continue to arrive under the NPA’s import scheduling system.

“As we speak right now, the vessel is discharging products,” he said.

He added that the authority’s line‑up programme allows imports to be planned ahead of time, ensuring adequate stocks are maintained.

Ghana’s fuel security is also being supported by local refining, which has continued production since July 2025.

The assurance comes shortly after government announced a GH¢2‑per‑litre intervention on diesel prices following another increase in petroleum costs.

Tasunti said while international developments may affect prices, the NPA’s priority is to guarantee availability.

He added that the combination of local refining, scheduled imports, and continuous replenishment should enable Ghana to maintain fuel security even if external supply conditions deteriorate.
