Four Ugandan athletes who disappeared after the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland have reportedly indicated that they plan to seek asylum for better living conditions.

Uganda’s team manager, Godwin Kayangwe, earlier stated that he was unaware of the reasons behind the disappearance of the four boxers.

Boxers Ibrahim Kemis (20), Nuhu Batte (22), Emily Nakalema (32), and Angel Katushabe (21) were scheduled to fly back to Uganda on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, but failed to board the flight home.

Sports media outlet NBS Sports reported that one of the missing boxers revealed the athletes intended to seek asylum and continue their boxing careers in a country they believed offered better training facilities and opportunities than Uganda.

They believe this move will place them in a stronger position to harness their talents, compete at the international level, and win major titles.

The boxer also appealed to Ugandans for understanding, asking not to be judged for the decision, as it was made in their best interest.

Meanwhile, Ugandan authorities have urged the athletes to return home and later make arrangements to travel to their desired destinations in order to safeguard their integrity.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded on August 2, 2026, with Uganda’s athletes winning three medals (0 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze).
