Police have arrested six people and launched investigations into violent disturbances at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Ashanti Region after students allegedly assaulted the school’s headmaster over claims that he had buried a baby on the school campus.

The Obuasi Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu, said the police had taken control of the situation and assured students and staff of their safety.

“We have deployed enough personnel to ensure the safety of students and staff. We will maintain a strong security presence here while investigations continue, and we urge everyone to remain peaceful and avoid taking the law into their own hands,” he said.

The incident, which left the school under heavy security, reportedly occurred between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on Monday after a student claimed to have seen the headmaster, Abdullai Zakari, near the school’s refuse dump.

According to reports, the student raised an alarm, prompting other students to rush to the area, where they allegedly discovered the body of a baby believed to be about five to six months old buried on the school premises.

The discovery sparked outrage among the students, who confronted and allegedly assaulted the headmaster, accusing him of being responsible for the burial.

Zakari sustained multiple injuries in the attack and is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

Police officers who responded to the scene exhumed the baby’s body and conveyed it to the morgue for preservation and forensic examination as part of ongoing investigations.

The unrest later escalated, with some students vandalising school property, including parts of the headmaster’s bungalow. Reports also indicate that some first-year students were assaulted after senior students accused them of siding with the headmaster.

Six people have so far been arrested in connection with the disturbances, while investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding both the alleged burial and the attacks that followed.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Obuasi Municipal Security Council, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, urged students to remain calm and allow the police to conduct their investigations.

“We want to appeal to all students to remain calm. The police are investigating the matter, and everyone should cooperate to ensure the truth is established,” she said.
