The government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the Ohawu Agricultural College in the Volta Region into a full-fledged university.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, gave the assurance when he received a delegation from the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and the Afife Traditional Council to discuss key educational development priorities in the region on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

The proposed upgrade of the college was among the major issues discussed during the meeting, with stakeholders seeking to expand access to tertiary education and strengthen agricultural training in the region.

Iddrisu said the government remained committed to the initiative, explaining that the process would begin with the provision of the necessary infrastructure and resources before the appropriate legislative framework was introduced to facilitate the establishment of the university.

The meeting also considered plans to establish a satellite campus of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) at Battor.

The delegation further raised concerns about infrastructure development in selected schools across the region, highlighting the need for improved facilities to support teaching and learning.

The Education Minister assured the traditional leaders of the Ministry’s willingness to work closely with stakeholders to advance the various initiatives.

He said collaboration with traditional authorities and other relevant stakeholders would be important in ensuring that the projects contribute meaningfully to educational development in the Volta Region.
