The Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has revealed that President John Dramani Mahama is expected to cut the sod before the end of August 2026 for the construction of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and airport hotel complex at the Accra International Airport.

Speaking to journalists during a site viewing on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, she said the project forms part of GACL’s efforts to expand airport infrastructure, improve parking capacity and enhance passenger experience while introducing new commercial and hospitality facilities within the airport enclave.

She disclosed that the project has already been handed over to the contractor, who is currently mobilising to the site ahead of the commencement of construction works.

“The contractor has taken over the site and is mobilising. Hoarding of the project area will begin shortly, and by the end of this month, God willing, we expect His Excellency the President to cut the sod for the official commencement of construction,” Opare said.

She explained that the development will comprise two underground parking levels, a ground-floor shopping mall with retail outlets, restaurants, food courts and office spaces, as well as five additional levels dedicated to vehicle parking.

“The project will have two underground parking levels. The surface level will be developed into a shopping mall with retail shops, restaurants, food courts and office spaces, while five additional floors above it will serve as car parks,” she explained.

Opare noted that the commercial facilities would also make the airport more convenient for travellers and visitors waiting to receive arriving passengers.

“If you are waiting to receive someone at the airport, you can spend time shopping, dining or relaxing before connecting directly to the meeters-and-greeters area to welcome your loved ones,” she stated.

She further revealed that the upper section of the complex will house two hotels with different functions.

According to her, one will be a luxury hotel open to the general public, while the other will serve as an airport hotel dedicated to accommodating passengers affected by flight cancellations, delays or grounded aircraft.

“The budget hotel will be accessible only from within the airport and will mainly cater for passengers who require temporary accommodation after flight disruptions. The luxury hotel, however, will be open to everyone and can be booked by any member of the public,” she said.

Opare also disclosed that an observatory would be constructed between the two hotels to allow visitors to watch aircraft take-offs and landings under a controlled booking system.

“We are creating an observatory where people can watch aircraft take off and land. Access will be by booking so that we can manage visitor numbers and schedule visits around flight movements,” she added.

She expressed optimism that the project would be completed within 24 months after construction officially begins.

“If all goes according to plan, the project should be completed within 24 months and be ready for commissioning,” Opare said.
