The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWL) has announced that residents in communities across the Greater Accra and Eastern regions are expected to experience a three-day interruption in water supply following major maintenance works on its Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines.

The planned exercise, scheduled to take place from August 6 to August 8, 2026, forms part of GWL’s ongoing efforts to strengthen critical water infrastructure and improve the reliability of water distribution to consumers.

According to a statement issued by the company on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, more than 300 metres of ageing pipeline sections have deteriorated and require immediate replacement to prevent frequent pipeline bursts and reduce water losses.

“The replacement works are part of our proactive infrastructure maintenance programme aimed at ensuring a more reliable and efficient water supply system for customers,” the statement said.

However, GWL indicated that operations at the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily suspended while five sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines are isolated for repairs.

“As a result of the temporary shutdown of the Kpong Water Treatment Plant, customers supplied by the Kpong Water Supply System should expect interruptions in water supply and reduced water pressure throughout the maintenance period,” GWL explained.

The affected areas include Gbetsele, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, and Dawhenya, as well as communities within the Tema Metropolis, including Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie, and adjoining areas.

Residents of Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku, and nearby towns in the Eastern Region will also be affected.

GWL appealed to consumers to take precautionary measures ahead of the maintenance works.

“We encourage all affected customers to store sufficient water before the commencement of the exercise and use available supplies judiciously throughout the maintenance period,” the company advised.

The company further called on hospitals and other essential service providers to activate contingency plans.

“Hospitals, healthcare facilities and other critical institutions are advised to make the necessary contingency arrangements. Water tankers will be deployed to support selected essential facilities where feasible,” GWL stated.

The company stressed that the temporary disruption is necessary to protect one of Ghana’s key water transmission systems.

“This investment will significantly reduce pipeline failures, minimise emergency shutdowns, improve operational efficiency and enhance the long-term reliability of water supply to customers,” GWL added.
