For Hearts of Oak, having Benjamin Asare and Solomon Agbasi competing for the same goalkeeping position is hardly a problem.

For Agbasi, however, it could soon become one.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper now finds himself at an important crossroads following the return of Asare from Ghana's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Asare, 34, has firmly established himself as one of the country's leading goalkeepers. In the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, he kept 14 clean sheets in 19 appearances for Hearts before taking his place between the posts for the Black Stars at the World Cup.

He kept clean sheets against both Panama and England, becoming the only goalkeeper at the tournament to prevent England from scoring.

His performances in the previous league campaign were equally impressive, with 13 clean sheets in 26 appearances and a save percentage of 75.6%.

But Agbasi's numbers suggest Hearts are not short of another capable goalkeeper.

Despite making just 12 Premier League appearances last season, Agbasi recorded nine clean sheets and conceded only five goals.

That means he kept a clean sheet in 75 percent of his league appearances, an impressive return for a goalkeeper who was largely playing when Asare was injured or away on international duty.

His development also caught the attention of the national team.

Agbasi was part of the Black Stars' preparations for the World Cup and remained with the squad throughout the tournament as a standby goalkeeper, although he did not make an appearance.

That experience could be an important stepping stone, but regular club football may now be even more important.

At 25, Agbasi is no longer at the stage where simply being part of a squad is enough.

He needs matches to build consistency, experience and a stronger claim for a permanent place in the Black Stars setup.

Yet leaving Hearts would not necessarily be the obvious answer.

Asare's age means his long-term future cannot be guaranteed, and remaining at Hearts could allow Agbasi to continue learning from an experienced goalkeeper who has now played at the highest level.

The question is whether Agbasi can afford to wait.

If Asare remains fit and continues as Hearts' first choice, Agbasi could once again find himself playing only when circumstances force a change.

On the other hand, a move to another club could give him the regular football needed to transform his potential into a sustained body of work.

The numbers show that Agbasi is ready to compete. The World Cup experience shows that the national team is watching.

Now, with Asare back at Hearts, Agbasi must decide whether his best route to becoming Ghana's next top goalkeeper is to fight for the No.1 shirt at Hearts or find a club where the gloves are already waiting for him.
