The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has disclosed that his outfit will no longer display the registration year on Ghana’s new vehicle number plates as part of reforms to modernise the country’s vehicle registration system.

Speaking on Asempa Radio on Monday, August 3, 2026, Kotey said the change means vehicle owners will no longer delay registration just to secure a particular year on their plates.

“There is no year of registration anymore, so who are you going to flex?” he remarked.

The redesigned plates will also introduce a new ownership system, tying registration numbers to the registered owner rather than permanently to the vehicle.

Under the new arrangement, sellers must remove their plates before handing over a vehicle. The DVLA will then deactivate the old number and issue the buyer a fresh registration after completing ownership transfer.

Kotey explained that the reform is intended to strengthen accountability and reduce disputes over vehicles that have changed hands.

“When you sell your car, ensure you remove your number plate to avoid being linked to offences or incidents involving it,” he advised.

He said the new system will improve traceability, enhance road safety, and support law enforcement.

The redesigned plates form part of broader reforms aimed at modernising vehicle registration and identification in Ghana.

"There will no longer be a year of registration displayed on vehicle number plates, so there will be no need for anyone to delay registering a vehicle just to flex with the year shown on the number plate."
