Justice of the Supreme Court, Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi, has lauded the remarkable growth of Ghana's legal profession, noting that it has produced thousands of lawyers over the decades.

He commended the efforts of key stakeholders who have helped expand legal education in the country, paving the way for more practitioners to join the profession.

Speaking at the University of Ghana School of Law's Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series on July 30, 2026, Justice Kulendi disclosed that a total of 12,200 lawyers have been enrolled since 1963, marking a significant milestone.

“The legal profession in Ghana has experienced remarkable growth. The expansion of legal education and professional training has enabled many more young men and women to enter the profession than at any previous time in our history.

“In 2025 alone, 961 new lawyers were enrolled as barristers and solicitors of the Supreme Court, bringing the total number of lawyers enrolled since 1963 to 12,200. These figures deserve celebration,” he said.

The Supreme Court judge emphasised that the achievement reflects major progress in Ghana's legal education system, creating more opportunities for public service and strengthening confidence in the legal profession.

“They represent greater access to legal education, broader opportunities for public service, and an expanding reservoir of legal talent available to serve the nation. They also demonstrate increasing public confidence in the legal profession as a vocation worthy of pursuit.

“Every generation leaves behind a legacy that will shape public confidence for those who come after,” Justice Kulendi added.
