President John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns over a video showing fish being dried under unhygienic conditions at Tema Newtown, describing the situation as a threat to public health.

The video, recorded by environmental advocacy group Buzstop Boys, captured poor sanitation conditions at the fishing community, where fish meant for sale was being processed in an environment surrounded by waste.

Speaking at the Ringway Gospel Centre Assemblies of God, in a video posted on X by The1957News on August 2, 2026, President Mahama said the footage highlighted the urgent need to improve sanitation and ensure safer food-handling practices.

“The fish is supposed to come into the market. These Buzstop Boys went to Tema Newtown, and if you see the rubbish there, they were drying fish. And that fish is supposed to come into the market,” he said.

The President commended the Buzstop Boys for drawing attention to sanitation challenges across the country and highlighting environmental concerns affecting communities.

He stressed the importance of maintaining clean food-processing areas to protect consumers and improve public health standards.

President Mahama also appealed to Ghanaians to practise responsible waste disposal, warning that dumping items such as sachet water plastics, Styrofoam containers and other refuse into drains contributes to flooding.

Quoting James 2:17, which states that “faith without works is dead,” the President said addressing sanitation challenges requires citizens to move beyond expressing concerns and take practical steps to keep their communities clean.

He urged Ghanaians to make proper waste management and environmental cleanliness part of their daily habits.
