The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cancelled the entire results of 105 candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) over examination malpractice.

The council also cancelled the subject results of 496 candidates after investigations into cases of irregularities detected during the conduct of the examination and the marking of scripts.

In addition, WAEC withheld the subject results of 119 candidates and the entire results of 48 candidates pending further investigations.

Announcing the release of the provisional results on July 29, 2026, the statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs for WAEC, John Kapi, said the decisions were approved by the 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners' Appointment Committee for the 2026 BECE.

"Cancellation of Subject Results of 496 candidates; Cancellation of Entire Results of 105 candidates; Withholding of Subject Results of 119 candidates; Withholding of Entire Results of 48 candidates," the statement said.

The council further disclosed that the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have also been withheld for further scrutiny.

According to WAEC, the affected results may either be released or cancelled after investigations are completed by August 31, 2026.

"Meanwhile, the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny. The withheld results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations by August 31, 2026," the council stated.

Candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld have been directed to visit WAEC's irregularities portal to check the reasons for the sanctions and the next steps.

WAEC also cautioned the public against fraudsters who claim they can upgrade examination results for a fee.

"The Council wishes to caution all stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee. Candidates are to note that WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated," the statement added.

A total of 620,243 candidates, made up of 304,415 males and 315,828 females from 20,789 schools, sat for the examination at 2,237 centres across the country. Out of the total number, 3,601 candidates were absent.
