Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has asserted that even members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have Ghana's interests at heart would be reluctant to see former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta return to manage the country's economy.

In a Facebook post shared on July 23, 2026, Awuni said Ghana's economy appears to be in a better state than it was under the previous administration.

"The first is that the economy looks healthier than it was in the previous administration. Some say the recovery started when the IMF came in, but the fact remains that even the NPP members who love Ghana would dread putting the economy back in the hands of Ken Ofori-Atta should a second chance present itself," he stated.

His remarks come amid public debate over the state of the economy following Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson's presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review.

While acknowledging improvements in the economy, Awuni argued that the country's challenges remain significant and should not be overlooked.

He maintained that Ghana is still grappling with low production, high unemployment and weak local manufacturing, warning that the growing presence of foreign-owned retail businesses could further undermine domestic production.

Awuni also raised concerns about the plight of farmers, saying many maize and rice producers had told him they were considering reducing cultivation or abandoning farming after receiving little support to recover losses incurred during the recent food glut.

Despite recognising what he described as ‘modest gains’ made by the government, including the relative stability of the cedi, Awuni said the economy was still far from being one that deserved overwhelming celebration.

He stressed that while government should be credited for positive developments, the country's broader economic realities require a more measured assessment.
