The prime suspect in the 2023 Ablekuma bullion van robbery, in which policeman Corporal Callistus Amoah was shot to death, has been killed.

According to a report by award-winning journalist Saddick Adams, the suspect, who has been identified as Albert Akozua, was shot and killed by police after he tried to escape following his arrest in a community in the Upper East Region called Kperi Kusanaba Binaba.

During a recent episode of his morning show on Angel TV, Saddick Adams narrated how the police traced the suspect from Accra to his hideout in Kperi Kusanaba Binaba.

He indicated that the police captured the suspect while he was attempting to flee from his hideout.

“From Tema, Ashiaman, Kumasi, he went to Kperi Kusanaba Binaba, and when I heard the police were looking for him, he tried to flee. Thankfully, as he was fleeing, the police stopped his car and asked for his name.

“They already knew that he was called Albert Akozua; he is a hardened criminal. This is his image. He was in a hoodie when he was caught and they asked him what his name was and he mentioned a different name and they told him he was lying,” he said in the Twi dialect.

He said that Albert Akozua eventually admitted that he was the person the police were looking for.

He said that after the suspect was arrested, he agreed to help the police retrieve the other two guns used in the attack, aside from the one seized from him, and also help find the other suspects involved.

He said that when they arrested Albert Akozoa at the first hideout, he tried to escape, but the police shot him.

He was taken to a nearby health facility but he succumbed to his injuries.

The 28-year-old cop, G/L/CPL Amoah Callistus, was shot multiple times by one of four men on top of two separate motorbikes when they pulled a surprise attack on the bullion van as it entered the StarOil Filling Station at Ablekuma Fanmilk on June 22, 2023.

The brazen armed robbers managed to escape from the scene with a bag they took from the van, even as the driver bolted.

CCTV footage, plus amateur videos, emerged after the dastardly act, showing how the policeman died, even when some residents of the area managed to rush him to the nearest health facility after the robbers had left the scene.

The deceased officer was attacked and fired at multiple times while he was in the passenger seat of a bullion van that had gone to a popular fuel station at Ablekuma to collect money.

In CCTV footage, the four men atop two motorbikes went directly for the policeman in the front seat of the white van, firing at him until he became motionless.
