A video of the late former President John Evans Atta Mills has resurfaced online, sparking conversations about his anti-corruption fight and accountability in public service during his tenure.

The old video has gained attention for two reasons, his stance against corruption and the fact that on July 21, 2026, he would have marked his 82nd birthday.

In the footage, sighted by GhanaWeb President Mills is seen making an unannounced visit to the Tema Harbour in February 2011, where he raised concerns about corruption and bribery allegations affecting revenue collection at the country’s main port.

During the visit, he expressed disappointment over Ghana’s revenue performance and warned some officials against engaging in practices that deprived the state of needed resources.

“We are not happy with the revenue efforts we are making. Please, I want to tell you that there are quite a number of you who are supporting corruption, who are agents here and are supporting corruption.

“My brothers and sisters, we need the money to develop the country, build schools for those who are going to schools under trees", he stated.

His remarks pointed to the fact that corruption and revenue leakages were limiting the government's ability to provide educational infrastructure and social services for Ghanaians.

The Tema Harbour visit came shortly after an investigative report by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas that exposed alleged corruption and bribery practices involving some officials at the port.

Following the exposé, President Mills visited the harbour to personally assess the situation and send a strong message to officials responsible for protecting state revenue.

The former president’s approach to fighting corruption was often associated with institutional reforms, accountability and calls for public officials to put national interest ahead of personal gain.

President Mills, who became Ghana’s third president under the Fourth Republic, served from 2009 until his death on July 24, 2012.

He is remembered by many Ghanaians for his humility, and calm leadership, often referred to as the "Asomdwehene" (King of Peace).

His presidency was marked by a focus on social justice, economic stability, and national unity, making him a symbol of peace and democracy in Ghana.
