A Brussels Airlines flight travelling from Accra to Lomé returned safely to the Accra International Airport (AIA) shortly after take-off on Monday, July 20, 2026, following a technical fault.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said the aircraft, operating as Flight SN278, departed Accra at 6:06 pm but developed a technical problem during the flight.

According to the GCAA, the flight crew decided to return to Accra as a precautionary safety measure.

"The aircraft departed Accra at 18:06 but experienced a technical fault during the flight. As a precautionary safety measure, the flight crew elected to return to Accra, where the aircraft landed safely at 18:18," a statement issued by GCAA said.

The authority commended the flight crew for following the required safety procedures and assured the public that passenger and crew safety remains its top priority.

"The GCAA commends the flight crew for adhering to established safety protocols and assures the public that the safety of passengers and crew remains the highest priority," it stated.

The GCAA said the cause of the technical fault is being investigated by Brussels Airlines under its supervision.

"The technical issue that necessitated the aircraft's return is currently being investigated by the airline in accordance with established aviation safety procedures and under the oversight of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority," the statement added.

Subsequently, as a further precautionary measure after the incident, Brussels Airlines canceled Flight SN278.

The GCAA said affected passengers are being assisted by the airline in line with the Ghana Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives, 2019 on consumer protection.

"As a result of the incident, Brussels Airlines has cancelled Flight SN278. The affected passengers are being accorded the necessary attention by the airline officials in accordance with the Ghana Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives, 2019 Part 2 - Consumer Protection," the Authority said.

The GCAA further assured the travelling public that Ghana's aviation safety and security oversight system remains strong
