Economist and Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Isaac Boadi, has questioned the rationale behind President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of three additional judges to the Supreme Court of Ghana.

According to him, although the nominees are qualified for the positions, the key concern is whether the expansion of the apex court is aimed at addressing delays in the determination of cases or improving the quality of judicial services.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo programme on July 17, 2026, Professor Boadi asked whether the appointment was necessary because of workload challenges facing the court or concerns about the effectiveness of the judiciary.

“I have heard of the government appointing three additional Supreme Court judges. Even though the people really qualify for the position, my concern is, at this period, is it that the court’s speed is limited and he wants them to help, or is the quality of service not going on well, and that is why he is appointing them?” he questioned.

Mahama nominates three new Justices to the Supreme Court bench

President Mahama has nominated three legal professionals for consideration to serve on Ghana’s highest court. The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, as well as legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association, Tony Forson.

Justice Amoako Asante brings extensive judicial experience, having previously served as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice before returning to the Ghanaian judiciary.

The nominations were made after consultations with the Judicial Council, in line with the constitutional requirements for appointments to the Supreme Court.
If approved by Parliament, the appointments will increase the number of Supreme Court justices from 18 to 21, a move expected to expand the capacity of the apex court in handling cases and improving judicial efficiency.
