May God give our leaders wisdom and common sense to run this country. No government can force anyone, except prisoners and its employees, to do any work at any time. The government doesn't feed, clothe and house me and my family. We pay taxes, property rates etc, and that is what is meant to pay for taking care of the sanitation needs of this country. The government cannot shirk it's responsibility onto the public.
The public's responsibility is to clean your property or immediate environment, like storefront etc. Beyond that, it is the government's responsibility to clean the wider public areas, gutters etc.
What the government needs to do is first provide adequate refuse collection facilities, like trash bins of various sizes at vantage points throughout the city, and ensure it employs sanitation contractors to empty them regularly. Then you educate and warn the public on refuse dumping and littering laws. Then you are ready to start punishing those who litter and dump rubbish illegaly, using sanitation officers, and ensure the sanitation laws are biting.

I don’t understand the minister, , why should the traders shut their shops tor two days, is the government going to feed them and their families for two days and pay their bills as well. At least they can help to clean from 8am in the morning to 1pm in the afternoon then open their shops from 2pm-6pm so that people can go and do their shopping or buy some food stuffs to go and cook in their homes, most people do their shopping on the weekends. Some of the items in the market will be rotten by then. Already many traders have lost huge sums of money because of the flooding and they are not getting any help from nowhere. I think this is not fair to the traders.

This is one of the most foolish things to say to Ghanaians. Do they think Ghanaians have been waiting for them to come and clean up after the floods? People have already cleaned their homes and shops and have moved on, trying to recover from their losses.
Then, after a week, they suddenly order people not to open their shops. Such a foolish announcement. Will the government provide food for families during the two days their shops and marketplaces are closed? This is nothing more than a public relations exercise, and nothing productive will come out of it.
Does the government think Ghanaians are so foolish that they are still sitting in floodwater waiting for officials to come and clean? If they genuinely want to clean the markets, they should create a proper timetable and work with traders. The remaining flood debris and rubbish require heavy machinery to remove, so they should assign the appropriate agencies to do that work. No one has left flood debris inside their shop.

The clean-up exercise is very good but the Minister should tell majority of Ghanaians how to dispose of the rubbish collected. I live at Danfa but there's no single container there to pour rubbish into, nor have I ever seen any vehicle from the assembly going round to collect rubbish. In this situation therefore, one is left with no option but to look for any gutter in which water is flowing, to pour the rubbish in. Some of us also pay aboboya riders to collect the rubbish and wherever they go and pour it cannot be our headache. The cleaning will amount to nothing if the assemblies fail to place containers at vantage points in various communities for rubbish. The government should be more responsible for rubbish choking waterways than the citizens.

This should not be a 3-day wonder. They will talk about it as if Jesus is coming. After one or two times, that will be the end of it. It should be a continuous exercise each month. I remember during one of the military regimes in Nigeria, the then 2nd in command of the army, Major General Idiagbon, institute this program where everybody will stop whatever they were doing to participate in this cleaning. It was done in the 1st Saturday of each month from 9am to 12 pm. No vehicles were allowed to move unless it's an ambulance, police or fire service. And if you default, or come out to participate, there was a fine you will have to pay. At that time, Lagos became one of the cleanest cities in the world. And so this shouldn't be a one-day wonder. It should be a continuous exercise and if this is done properly, Accra will be one of the cleanest cities in the world.

It's great for us to adopt a clean environment culture and great if that's led by the president but has the president got the constitutional right to impose that?
This behaviour will surely provoke ppl not to come out and take part in the cleanup, just sell the idea to them and let them feel how important it's. If JJ Rawlings Military style approach did not work in his 19yrs rule how d ...

"Lip service" is an idiom for publicly supporting or agreeing with an idea in words, but taking no actual action to back it up
Are we now in the military regime era?
The minister should tell Ghanaians under what law is he speaking with arrogance and threatening citizens.
This reminds me of Military rule eras in our country. This must have been planned with representatives of traders associations and the like which coupled with public education. A typical stop gap measure which in the long ru ...
