NPP communicator, Awal Mohammed, has said the growing admiration for military governments among some Ghanaian youth is being driven by selective information rather than a full understanding of conditions in those countries.

Reacting on Joy News to a survey indicating that some Ghanaians would support military rule, Mohammed said many young people are drawing conclusions from carefully curated images and reports from countries such as Burkina Faso.

He recalled a recent conversation with a young Ghanaian who argued that Burkina Faso was on track to outperform Ghana under military leadership.

“The man was doing so well, according to him, to the extent that Burkina Faso would be better than Ghana,” Mohammed said.

He said he challenged that view by pointing to social and economic indicators.

“I told him that all the things you hear about Burkina Faso are things that they want you to see, but there are a lot of challenges with the country that you don’t even wish to live there.”

According to Mohammed, Ghana continues to outperform Burkina Faso in key development indicators despite frustrations with democratic governance.

“When I gave him all the indices, he felt that yes, Ghana is really better.”

He argued that the popularity of Burkina Faso’s military leadership among some young people reflects a perception problem that must be addressed through civic education.
