Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa has announced the temporary suspension of the registration of Ghanaians who want to be evacuated from South Africa over the ongoing attacks on foreigners in the country, which have been termed xenophobia.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 1, 2026, the High Commission stated that the suspension of the registration would take effect on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
It explained that the suspension is due to the high number of registrations it has already recorded, which have to be processed in collaboration with South African authorities.
“The High Commission of the Republic of Ghana to South Africa wishes to inform all Ghanaians residing in South Africa that registration for the ongoing voluntary repatriation exercise will be temporarily suspended with effect from June 2, 2026.
“The temporary suspension is to enable the High Commission and the Home Affairs Department to process and screen the large number of applications already received. To date, over 1,500 Ghanaians have registered, and the verification and processing of these applications is currently underway,” part of the statement read.

The Commission also stated that the date for the resumption of registration of Ghanaians who want to return home would be announced.
“The date of the next phase for the new registration will be communicated in due course. The High Commission further wishes to assure all interested Ghanaians who have not yet registered that the repatriation exercise has not yet ended.
“The High Commission appreciates the cooperation, patience, and understanding of the Ghanaian community in ensuring a well-coordinated exercise,” the statement concludes.
The government of Ghana has already repatriated 300 Ghanaians living in South Africa due to the ongoing attacks.
About 600 Ghanaians are also expected to be evacuated within the coming days.
