The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally filed a petition with the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, demanding the removal of Joseph Yennuban Kunsong, the presiding judge of Circuit Court 9 in Accra.
The petition accuses the circuit court judge of judicial bias and procedural misconduct regarding his handling of the high-profile criminal case involving the party’s outspoken Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC.
Supreme Court rejects Dame's withdrawal letter in former Chief Justice's case
The official document, dated May 22, 2026, was signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and officially received by the Office of the Chief Justice on Monday, June 1, 2026.
According to the ruling party, Judge Kunsong’s recent rulings and the exercise of his judicial discretion violate fundamental legal norms.
The NPP explicitly targets the judge’s decision to impose a custodial remand on Abronye DC, arguing that the charges offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace and publication of false news are non-capital offenses that typically do not warrant pretrial detention.
The party contends that the court's stringent approach severely undermines the constitutional presumption of innocence and violates the basic human rights of the accused. Consequently, the NPP is requesting a full administrative probe by the Chief Justice into Judge Kunsong's conduct, questioning his fitness to remain on the bench.
The Office of the Chief Justice is expected to review the formal complaint to determine if a prima facie case of misbehavior exists.
