Residents of Tetegu, Sampah Valley and Choice in the Ga South Municipality have been affected by flooding following the opening of the spill gates of the Weija Dam by the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), with several vehicles and properties submerged in the process.
According to GWL, the water level in the dam has risen above the maximum operating level of 48 feet, prompting the controlled spillage of excess water to protect the structural integrity and safety of the dam.
In a report by graphic.com.gh on May 28, 2026, the company explained that the annual spilling exercise is carried out during the rainy season whenever the water level exceeds 45 feet in order to prevent undue pressure on the dam and avert possible disaster.
The flooding has left sections of the affected communities inundated, with residents struggling to salvage belongings as vehicles, homes and other properties remain submerged.
The company further disclosed that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast more torrential rains upstream, a development expected to increase inflows into the dam area.

“As a result, the spilling exercise will continue until the water level recedes to an appreciable and safe operating level. This process may continue for some months depending on rainfall patterns and inflow volumes,” the report said.
GWL warned residents living along the course of the river downstream of the dam to immediately evacuate from vulnerable areas to safeguard lives and property.
Management also indicated that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and various District Assemblies have initiated plans to clear structures and obstructions that impede the free flow of water into the sea.
The company urged the relevant authorities to expedite the exercise to minimise flooding risks and protect affected communities.
Ghana Water Limited reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the dam infrastructure while ensuring public safety and appealed to the public to cooperate with all emergency directives and advisories issued by state institutions.
