The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has activated emergency operation centres nationwide as heavy rains continue to trigger flooding in parts of Accra, submerging homes and destroying properties.

The move comes as several residents grapple with the impact of flooding triggered by the ongoing rainy season, raising concerns about the safety of households living in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

NADMO says emergency response teams have been placed on high alert and are ready to respond quickly to distress calls from affected communities.

Speaking to Citi News, Senior Officer at NADMO's Inspectorate Department, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, said the organisation's decentralised structure allows emergency personnel to be deployed immediately once incidents are reported.

“The emergency response team is always on standby, and they are always prepared. Once we receive a report, they move to the area to assist,” he said.

According to him, the teams are equipped to support evacuation efforts and help remove floodwater from homes affected by the downpours.

As part of efforts to improve emergency response, NADMO is also introducing a mobile application that will enable residents to report flooding incidents more accurately and in real time.

The app, which is expected to be launched at the organisation's headquarters, will allow users to share their exact locations and communicate in local languages, making it easier for responders to identify and reach affected areas.

“We are launching an app at the NADMO headquarters for people to be able to give us the right location of every flooding situation. You can speak Twi, Ewe and any local dialect. This will help in effective flood management,” he said.

The initiative forms part of NADMO's broader strategy to improve disaster response as Ghana enters the peak of the rainy season, a period often marked by flooding in several parts of the country.

Authorities continue to urge residents in flood-prone communities to remain alert, follow safety advisories and report emergencies promptly to enable swift intervention by rescue teams.
