A family of five in Aboso, a community in Tarkwa in the Western Region, narrowly escaped death after their house reportedly collapsed following heavy rainfall, with suspected illegal mining activities cited as a possible contributing factor.
According to a viral video shared on X on May 25, 2026, continuous rains are believed to have weakened the soil structure beneath the property, eventually causing the building to cave in while the family was inside.
It was alleged in the video that underground illegal mining pits have become widespread in parts of the community, raising concerns about the stability of residential structures.

“When you stamp your feet on the ground in Aboso, you can hear the sound underneath,” the report said.
The recent heavy rains are also believed to be exposing and worsening underground weaknesses, increasing the risk to homes built above suspected excavated grounds.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
