With a history of imperial power, the fear of Ashanti (a region curved out by colonialism) remain unfounded - except inthe heads of those who pander believes.
Ashanti is a believe which shall grow stronger because the colonial construct we call Ghana today has come to the end of it's natural lifecycle - a Non-Tribal regions of Ashanti, Volta, Greater Accra, Central, etc. are a natural outputs of the current - because they are evolving in that direction by themselves already.
Our simple task is to legislate and give them advance governance systems. And we have to start by making tribalism and cessesion reasonable offences at all levels.
The rest is dialogue. (SOS).

Professor Ahwoi is speaking from the past - the reason is that Ghana is stuck!
1. The country is too big and growing too fast to remain a Unitary-Centralised entity. Technically speaking, it is becoming ungovernable by itself.
2. The Unitary-Centralised state has bogged dowb the nation since colonial times while multi-cultural and multi-lingual regions have been created over time - these are enough.
Ghana does not have to follow a traditional federal system or devolved model as in developed countries. It can create it's own regionalised-state system to relieve the load on central government. And no social group can secede because of resource challenges.
And the fear of Ashanti is neocolonial scaremongering. With a thoughtful regionalisation based on dialogue Ghana will emerge as a great nation on it's way to advancement for the sake of its people. Forward. (Samuel Ofori-Sey).

Our current concept of a decentralised state points us to tribalised regions - that is a result of neo(colonial) upbringing!
We have to dialogue to replace the colonial model/ideology of a tribalised-region with diverse ones modelled on how the most advanced societies evolved.
Professor Ahwoi himself states correctly that Ghana (and almost all nations on earth) are social constructs - what I see is that that construct has come to the end of it's lifecycle so let's boldly replace it. Where I agree with the professor is on time-frame and processes based on cool-headedness and DIALOGUE with all sections of the society including security services.
A new non-tribalised/regionalised Ghana is the best option to advance the nation. The current Unitary-Centralised feeds on/from colonialism and has to go - neocolonialism has to end!
Forward.

All nations are advanced by leaders within a process that sideline bigots and tribalists!
And that time has come upon Ghana to advance (and not just develop) because the natural lifecycle of a colonial Ghana is over - social integration shall accelerate contrary to what some believe and a sense of a unified nation shall intensify in the younger generation to the surprise of their parents.
The fear of a new regionalised Ghana which is not based on tribalism and bigotry is already here (and if in doubt, enquire from the upcoming generation and observe their culture).
The role of the older generation in this evolution will be guidance and cultural transition devoid of the hatred which has been rendered obsolete in time.
No one can stop the tide of time. "All things shall pass away in in their place there shall be new things" - this is our time to leave a better Ghana behind for our descendants.

Creating more regions renders governance difficult and a negative development.
If re-merger cannot be achieved now then regionalised non-tribal governance models have to be created in accordance with the main cultures of current regions to halt the total takeover by external entities to slow down and reverse neocolonialism - this is urgent.

KWAMENA AHWOI IS A TOO KNOWN OVERRATED PROFESSOR. ONE OF THE FANTE ACADEMIC IMPERIALISTS WHO TRIED TO SUPPRESS SMALLER AKAN TRIBES IN CENTRAL REGION BY STEALING THEIR LANDS FOR FANTES WHEN HE WAS THE MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT. KWAMENA AHWOI LACKS BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF HOW MODERN SOCIETIES HAVE EVOLVED ESPECIALLY THOSE WHICH TRANSITIONED FROM CENTRALIZED RULE AND CENTRAL PLANNING SUCH AS CHINA AND RUSSIA. THE KEY HAS BEEN DECENTRALIZATION AND THE USE OF DIRECTLY ELECTED MAYORS. THIS IS HAPPENENING ALL AROUND THE WORLD FROM CHINA WITH ITS ELECTED VILLAGE MAYORS, RUSSIA WITH ITS ELECTED MAYORS, INDIA, ALMOST ALL OF EUROPE AND NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, SOUTH KOREA, INDONESIA, MALAYSIA AND OTHER NUMEROUS COUNTRIES. WHAT GHANA NEEDS NOW ARE DIRECTLY ELECTED MAYORS RUNNING LOCAL ADMINISTRATION AND GIVEN CERTAIN CLEAR BOUNDARIES OF RESPONSIBILITIES, KWAMENA AHWOI DOES NOT WANT CHANGE FROM HIS OUTMODED TRIBALISM-INSPIRED DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES WHERE CURRENTLY ALMOST HALF OF ALL APPOINTED MAYORS IN THE AKAN AREAS ARE NOT AKANS BUT EWES AND NORTHERNERS IMPOSED ON AKANS WITHOUT THE CORRESPONDING SCHEME EFFECTED IN NON-AKAN AREAS AS WAS DONE BY ACHEAMPONG AND KWAME NKRUMAH. ASANTES DO NOT NEED TO BE A STATE. ASANTES NOW HAVE THEIR OWN WRITTEN LANGUAGE (ASANTE TWI), EXTENSIVELY DOMINATE THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT IN ACCRA, DOMINATE GHANAIAN STATE POSITIONS EVERY EIGHT YEARS WHEN NPP IS IN POWER. MUCH OF THE CURRENT WEALTJ CREATED IN GHANA ARE NOT IN ASANTE AREAS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE OIL AND MOST OF THE COCOA PRODUCED ARE CURRENTLY IN REGIONS SUCH AS WESTERN AND WEST NORTH REGIONS. DECENTRALIZATION IS NOW MORE URGENT AS THE COUNTRY'S POPULATION APPROACHES 35 MILLION IN 2027, THE COUNTRY'S 70TH YEAR OF INDEPENDENCE.

The MMDA's he created have become the weakest chain in the governance system and toothless. All the environmental sanitation issues lies at the door step of a weak functioning bearucratic system with capacity to enforce decentralised spatial development planning in the MMDA. In about a decade the whole of Ghana woll become one shanti slum connecting Accra to Kasoa to Winneba to be one big metro filled with rubbish, no roads l, no light with harphazard planning. When you ftive through rural Ghana which Assembly is enforcing planning . All the townsand villages have become one big slum. And it is very scary. This is what the professor must be concerned not a renewed Ashanti empire. He has forgotten the Ashanti confederation itself is also hanging on a thin thread as many independent states were losely bound by oaths and not by conquest. Adanse, Asante Akyem etc .
