Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, has described the ongoing arrests of some NPP members as unnecessary and misguided.
Speaking in an interview on Angel FM in Kumasi, the lawyer argued that attempts to justify the arrests by referencing incidents under the previous NPP administration were flawed.
“The ongoing arrest of NPP members is stupidity,” he stated.
According to Obiri Boahen, some supporters of the National Democratic Congress have defended the arrests by pointing to the detention of media personalities such as Bongo Ideas and Captain Smart during the NPP administration.
“Bongo Ideas and Captain Smart were arrested under the NPP, and this is what the NDC is using as justification,” he said.
However, he maintained that such actions contributed to public dissatisfaction with the previous government and should not be repeated.
“But this was even part of the reason why people voted out the NPP,” he argued.
“There is no need for the comparison because society frowns against this. So why are they repeating the same actions?” he asked.
Obiri Boahen further criticised the handling of a case involving Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, arguing that the legal process could raise concerns about fairness and conflict of interest.
“If what Abronye said about the judge was untrue and false, he is not supposed to be arraigned before the same judge.
“There will definitely be a conflict of interest, and personal biases may reflect in the judgment,” he stated.
He added that such concerns should be openly discussed in the interest of justice and fairness.
“This is common sense and should be talked about,” he said. “These people do not have a bit of it.”
