Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has defended his criticism of a Circuit Court judge, describing it as both ethical and constitutional while raising concerns over what he claims is a troubling pattern in the handling of political cases.

In a post shared on X on May 19, 2026, Afenyo-Markin said he had every right to publicly question the conduct of the judge presiding over Circuit Court 9, whom he accused of disregarding the law and the rights of citizens.

“It is both ethical and within my constitutional rights to call out a Judge who has no respect for the law and the rights of citizens. There is a pattern in the conduct of the Circuit Court 9 Judge in political cases that go before him,” he stated.

The Minority Leader said he could not, in good conscience, respect a judge who, in his view, had shown disregard for legal principles and constitutional rights.

“I cannot, in good conscience, respect a Judge who has no respect for the law. The Minority Caucus in Parliament will not shut its eyes to the conduct of this Judge,” he said.

He further disclosed that the Minority Caucus would take steps in Parliament and through constitutional channels to challenge what he described as the judge’s conduct.

“A series of actions will be taken in Parliament and the appropriate constitutional steps will be taken to rebuke him. Our law Lords are not above the law,” Afenyo-Markin indicated.

According to him, raising concerns about a judge’s conduct should not be interpreted as a personal attack but rather an effort to ensure accountability within the judiciary.

“Questioning the excesses of a Judge’s pattern of conduct does not amount to an attack on his person,” he stressed.

Afenyo-Markin also called on the Chief Justice to pay closer attention to the conduct of the Circuit Court 9 judge and ensure adherence to judicial standards.

“The Chief Justice must keep an eye on the Circuit Court 9 Judge and prevail upon him to uphold the ethos of his judicial robe and wig,” he said.

The remarks appeared to be a response to criticism from the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), which had earlier condemned the lawmaker’s previous comments about the judge as unethical and unprofessional.

At a press conference on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about the continued remand of Abronye DC, arguing that it raises constitutional issues.

He described aspects of the legal process as inconsistent with constitutional protections on bail and freedom of expression.

He further launched a strong attack on the presiding judge, saying, "That Circuit Court 9 judge, I have no respect for him. I pray he summons me for contempt. I will continue to disrespect him until he upholds the law. It's a shame on the judiciary. He doesn't talk law," he said.
